Taking the decision out of the hands of local school administrators, Gov. Mark Dayton announced Friday morning he has ordered public schools in Belle Plaine and across the state are closed Monday (Jan. 6). The order effectively closes Our Lady of the Prairie and Trinity Lutheran elementary schools as well as public charter schools in Cologne and Green Isle.

    Voters in the Belle Plaine School District selected three well-known faces Tuesday to help lead the community’s public schools over the next four years.

    They elected Tracy O’Brien, Diane Skelley and Terry Kahle to the board.  O’Brien topped the balloting with 283 votes. Skelley finished with 263 and Kahle received 236 votes. Gary Steinhagen finished fourth in the race for three seats. He received 202 votes.

    Motorists should watch for additional stop situations on the Highway 169 detour between St. Peter and Le Sueur beginning today (Aug. 13) and to expect additional delays as the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) makes adjustments to improve safety along the route.

    The detour, which includes Broadway Avenue in St. Peter, Nicollet County Road 20 and Sibley County Road 8, was the concern of many local citizens and the site of a fatal crash yesterday.

    If more rain doesn’t get in the way, the approximately 200-foot washout of Sibley County Road 6 (Scenic Byway Road) near Crahan Lane in Faxon Township will be reopened by mid-August.

    Thursday morning (July 31), Sibley County commissioners accepted a bid from Chard Tiling & Excavating of Belle Plaine to temporarily repair the washout that occurred after torrential rains soaked the area June 19.

    Anthony VonBank, a Belle Plaine Senior High School English teacher who recently resigned, is leading a group of 30 students and adult chaperones.

    Highway 169 motorists between St. Peter and Le Sueur will be restricted to two-way on two lanes beginning July 17 for several months for reconstruction work that help keep traffic moving during Minnesota River flooding.

    From July 17 to late-August, traffic will be restricted to two lanes, two-way in the southbound lanes from St. Peter to Roberts Creek and two-way traffic in northbound from Roberts Creek to north of the Cambria silo.  The traffic restrictions will allow reconstruction on the northbound lanes from Union Street to north of Highway 22/Dodd Street in St. Peter, permanent access to Treaty Site, highways 169/93 ramps, and removal of the crossing at Ritt Street.

    A Cologne Man was fatally injured in a crash at the intersection of Highway 284 and County Road 153 north of Cologne Monday evening.

    Godfrey H. Widmer was driving on County Road 153 just before 6:50 p.m. when, according to the Carver County Sheriff’s Office, he went through a stop sign and crossed Highway 284. A 1999 Honda Accord southbound on Highway 284 driven by Eric Hedin of Waconia hit Widmer’s 2005 Chrysler Town & Country minivan.
