I was saddened and shocked to read about the passing of Dan Ruud. As  I read the article in last week’s Herald I was impressed as to how many lives this man had touched through his writing and photo journaling for our newspaper.
Is there a home where a scrapbook does not contain clippings of special events at school, prom, sports or BBQ Days or other town events? We owe a lot to this man who helped us to see ourselves celebrating or in trial through his journaling work.
My condolences to his wife, Luanne and his sons.  We will miss this man.

As the Metropolitan Council Representative for District 4, I am fiercely dedicated to working to advance our region and to represent my district. When I see something that could be detrimental to either of those, I feel it is critical to speak up. Right now, we have an issue that could impact many people in a very negative way.

I have to commend Brian Lynch for sharing his insights in the last two Belle Plaine Heralds concerning the groups “Freedom from Religion” and the “Reason Alliance, LTD”.  It is becoming less and less popular to speak up against these things as a Christian.  So much bullying is going on in the name of “Separation of Church and State”.  The idea behind that was that government could not establish a state church.  That is all.

We would like to bring attention to the general public about the recent budget cuts of the Belle Plaine Area Schools. We are appalled that some of the most practical and influential classes are being cut. These classes are the shop/industrial arts, and the agriculture education classes. One of the two Ag teacher positions is being cut to 1/3 time. Odds are, they will not find a teacher to fill this position.

A country’s national budget defines its priorities and values. The Republican budget is the opposite of our American values.

Congratulations to Mr. Lynch for serving in the Navy. Your service is appreciated. You do make two leaps in your letter to the Herald that deserve clarification

Many years ago when I was 17 years old, I applied to the U.S. Naval Academy.  As part of that process I was able to witness the interview of a fellow candidate

I want to recognize a recent letter in the Belle Plaine Herald for confirming my comments about PETA. PETA is a worldwide lobbying organization with a lot of money and therefore power. PETA trains individuals to lie on their job applications, trespass, and steal video images.

I have a few comments regarding the letter in last week’s Herald about circuses. Ringling Brother’s Circus is NOT closing because of continued harassment by animal rights organizations, it is closing BECAUSE of violation of animal rights AND because circuses are out of touch in the 21st century.

With this letter I hope to demonstrate that a reasonable and honest evaluation of a previous Freedom from Religion Foundation (FFRF) display will help everyone to determine not only the stance of FFRF towards those of us who desire to exercise our rights to the legal expression of religion in a Limited Public Forum, but also the difficulty that FFRF will have doing something similar at the now world famous Belle Plaine Veterans Memorial Park.

Prior to his election as our 2nd District Congressman, Jason Lewis made some bold promises. Ever since his election I have carefully scrutinized Jason’s actions. His selection to the powerful Budget Committee has enabled Jason to keep his promises.

Bill Would Pave the Way for More & Larger Factory Farms
In rural Minnesota, we know farmers are facing record low prices and our communities are suffering because of that.Legislators should be working to figure out how to help family farmers get through these tough times. Instead, I see bills designed to help the biggest corporate-backed operations get bigger and take away the rights of neighbors.

There have been a lot of headlines already this year. The closing down of Ringling Brothers Circus was really important to me. I confess that I attended the circus only once. I enjoyed it but never found a way to return. Ringling Brothers is closing because it could no longer survive the lawsits, picketing, and general harassment of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), HSUS (Humane Society of the United States), and their local committees and action arms.

In reading Vincent Carraher’s Letter to the Editor in the March 8 issue, I was impressed that Mr. Carraher clearly lays out a Belle Plaine resident’s concern based on the Constitutional principle that each citizen has the right to stand up and petition their government to not give preference to one religious view over another or no religion.

    Concerning Veteran’s VFW Monument:
My wife Lori and I were residents of the City of Belle Plaine for 17 years and we had the good fortune of making friends with many fine people in the community. The friendships are still in place; we are pleased to say.
